White Willow Bark

White willow bark was used by the ancient Egyptians and was even mentioned in the writings of Hippocrates. The synthetic compound used to make modern aspirin was originally derived from this herb.
Other Names
The latin name for this herb is salix alba. It's also called European willow or just willow bark.
Appearance
This is a medium to large sized willow tree. The trunk can grow to be a meter in diameter. The leaves on this willow tree are lighter than most becasue they are covered with soft white hairs.
Origins
The tree is native to Europe and Asia.

The bark is dried and used.

This herb is an anti-inflammatory and a natural pain killer. It can be used to treat these conditions:

Side Effects and Warnings
Because this herb has the same qualities as aspirin don't give it to children or teenagers who have a fever, flu or chicken pox because it can cause the child to develop Reye's syndrome.
You shouldn't take this herb if you have any of the following conditions:
- gout
- abnormally high levels of uric acid (hyperuricemia)
- asthma
Don't take the herb if you are nursing or pregnant.
