Thyme
Natural Healing Herbs
Thyme is a commonly used culinary herb. I love putting it on my oven roasted potatoes, but this popular herb can be taken for medicinal purposes too.
Other Names
The proper name for this herb is Thymus vulgaris.
Appearance
A member of the mint family, this herb is a shrub that has small leaves that run all the way up woody stems. It is an evergreen plant and has small pink or purple flowers.
Origins
The plant originated in southern Europe and is now grown in southern and eastern Europe, north Africa and North America.
Parts Used
The leaves and sometimes stems are used.
Medicinal Uses
This herb has antiseptic properties. It can be used to treat:
- coughs
- sore throat
- infections
- respiratory problems
- congestion
- hay fever

Side Effects and Warnings
There few known side effects from the use of this herb, but you should still be careful if you are taking prescription medication or other herbal products.
When taken in large qualities it can cause uterine contractions so avoid this herb if you are pregnant.
