Hot flashes are experienced by women during menopause. It happens because of a decrease of estrogen in the body. This hormone decrease makes the hypothalamus (the part of the brain that controls body temperature) go a little haywire.

Hot flashes are accompanied by rapid heart rate and sweating. Sometimes you'll feel a chill just before or just after the flash occurs. Your skin temperature can raise up to 6 degrees during one of these flashes. Often times they happen at night and disturb your sleep.

Here are some things you can do to control your hot flashes naturally.

Destress

Stress triggers hot flashes in some women. Give yourself time to relax. Start including mediation, yoga, massage, or other relaxing activities in your schedule. Try going for walks.

Always give yourself enough time to accomplish a task so you don't get stressed about it. Try to plan ahead of time. Be sure to get the amount of sleep your body requires. For most adults that's 8 hours, but some of us need more sleep than that.

Anger can also contribute so try to avoid it.

Diet

Food can be used as a natural remedy for hot flashes. Some foods may trigger these flashes. Avoid spicy foods, alcohol, hot drinks, white flour, and white sugar.

Eat a balanced diet that includes a lot of dark green leafy vegetables. Include good quality proteins in your diet along with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables.

If you're overweight loosing a few extra pounds will also help control your hot flashes. Don't loose too much weight though. Being too thin will also contribute to hot flashes.

Exercise

Exercising 3 times a week for just 20 minutes will decrease your hot flashes by increasing the amount of endorphins in your body.

Vitamins

Depletion of certain vitamins can contribute to flashes. Be sure you're taking a supplement that contains these vitamins:

  • vitamin C
  • vitamin E
  • B Complex
  • magnesium
  • potassium
  • calcium

Herbs

The following herbs are used as part of a natrual remedy for hot flashes:

  • wild yam
  • vitex (angus catus or chasteberry)
  • black cohosh
  • blue cohosh
  • ginseng
  • dong quai
  • sarsaparilla
  • false unicorn
  • red raspberry leaves
  • motherwort
  • licorice root
  • spearmint

Be Prepared

Being prepared will also help with your natural remedy for hot flashes. Dress in layers so when you have a hot flash you can take something off to help cool down. At night sleep in light cotton pajamas. Wear natural fibers that breath easily.
