Understanding Gingivitis

Gingivitis is the swelling of the gums caused by bacteria that lives in the mouth. Bacteria causes plaque build up on the teeth along the gumline. When it is not removed it hardens and becomes tartar. Tartar buildup irritates the gums causing them to swell.

The symptoms of gingivitis include:

  • swelling in the gums
  • gums that are tender or painful to the touch
  • bright red or purple gums

If left untreated gingivitis can progress to periodontitis or periodontal disease and eventually result in tooth loss. If you notice that your have gingivitis make an appointment with your dentist. The dentist will prescribe antibiotics to fight the infection. Once the swelling goes down the dentist will clean the gingivitis causing tartar from your teeth.

Home Remedies for Gingivitis

If you want to to treat your gingivitis at home I recommend you do two things.

Oil Pulling

Oil Pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic practice used to cleanse the body of impurities. It is also quite useful for easing mouth pain like toothaches and gingivities. Try oil pulling with extra virgin coconut oil to pull some of the infection out of the gums and ease the pain.

Put a tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth and swish is around slowly for 15 minutes. Don't swallow it. When you're done spit the oil into the trash. Don't spit it into your sink or toilet. Coconut oil can clog your pipes. Then rinse your mouth out well with warm water.

You should oil pull three times a day to help fight gingivitis.

Salt Water Rinse

After you oil pull rinse your mouth with very salty water. Put some warm water in a glass and add as much salt as you can stand. The saltier the solution the better. It's best to use sea salt. Rinse your mouth with the solutions for 30 seconds three times daily.

Echinacea Tincture Rinse

If you can't stand using a salt rinse try making a rinse with an echinacea tincture. Add a dropper full of echinacea tincture to a half a cup of warm water. Rinse with the mixture for 30 seconds three times daily.

Prevention

The best natural remedy for gingivitis is prevention. You can prevent gingivitis by practicing good oral hygiene.

Use an electric toothbrush. An electric toothbrush will help you clean more plaque from the surface of your teeth. You might also want to try using a water pick.

Floss daily to clean plaque from between your teeth.

Get regular cleanings from your dentist to prevent tartar buildup.

Sometimes gingivitis can occur from a lack of vitamin C. Make sure you eat plenty of fresh veggies and fruit so you're getting all the vitamins you need.
