We all know about how dangerous high cholesterol can be. It can put you at risk of developing hardening of the arteries and heart disease. While I'm sometimes sceptical about how dangerous it really is, I know I need to keep my cholesterol in check. Here are some great natural ways to lower your cholestrol.
Lifestyle
We have to give a nod to diet and exercise as the most important of the natural remedies for high cholesterol. Eating right and getting enough exercise will keep your LDL (bad cholesterol) down and your HDL (good cholesterol) up.
Cut down on animal fats. Meat and dairy products are high in cholesterol. Switching the animal fats that you do decide to eat to free range organic options will also help cut down on the amount of bad fats found in your meat. Opt for more chicken and fish than red meat. Oily fish like salmon, herring and mackrel are especially good for the heart because they're rich in omega 3 fatty acids.
Eliminate trans fats from your diet. Start reading the labels of all the food you buy. If anything hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated is included in the ingredients don't buy it. They're found in most premade food. Hydrogenated oils are used because they help extend the self life of these products, but they also clog up your arteries.
Eat food that contain soluble fiber like beans, oats, rye, and barely.
Start adding garlic to your food. Fresh garlic tastes great and lowers cholesterol. If you don't like the taste of garlic you can take garlic pills.
Of course, you also have to make sure you eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables.
If you smoke, I'm sorry but you really should quit. Quitting smoking lowers your LDL and increases your HDL. Frankly, it's good for your heart and even better for your lungs too. I know it's hard, but your health will improve so much that you'll be happy you did.
