Natural Remedies for Hay Fever

These natural remedies for hay fever really work. Let's look at some natural hay fever remedies that will help relieve the itchy eyes and congestion so you can get through the day a little easier.

Hay fever happens when your immune system over reacts to a normally harmless substance--like pollen. When you are exposed to the allergent your eyes, nose and throat react strongly. Histamines are produced by cells in these areas. That's what gives you that horrible allergic reaction.

The symptoms of hay fever include:

  • sneezing
  • congestion
  • coughing
  • postnasal drip
  • watery eyes
  • itchy, runny nose
  • itchy throat
  • sinus pressure
  • fatigue

You're probably well aware of the symptoms. So, let's stop wasting time and start looking at the natural remedies for hay fever.

Diet

Diet can do a lot to help treat many health concerns you might have. Dairy makes mucus production worse. Cutting out all diary products (cheese, milk, butter, yogurt) will help make you less congested during allergy season.

Cutting processed foods out of your diet and eating fresh nutrituous foods will help also. Avoid white flour, white sugar, alcohol, and tobacco. There are some specific foods that will help lessen your allergies too.

According to a study published in Thorax magazine, residence of the island of Crete who eat a traditional Mediterranean diet had less chances of having seasonal allergies. Their diets included nuts, oranges, apples, tomatos, and grapes. Fish, especially oily fish, is also good for reducing hay fever because they contain a lot of omega 3 fats.

Other foods that will help boost your immune system and ease allergies include foods containing zinc like oysters, beef and legumes. Garlic and hot peppers will help clear out congestion.

My stepson used to get severe hay fever. We cut diary out of his diet completely and cut out all the processed foods and now he can go outside during hay fever season with no problems. He only suffers from hay fever very occasionally.

Exercise

Exercise should be included in all natural remedies for hay fever. Staying physically fit will help reduce your hay fever symptoms. That means you may have to limit your exercise to the gym to limit your exposure to pollen.

Honey

Has been exposed to pollen. That's the very nature of it. You can try taking a spoonful of honey everyday for a month before allergy season. It will help desensitize you to the pollen.
