Natural Remedies for Diarrhea
The Best Home Remedies for Diarrhea

Here are some natural remedies for diarrhea. These home remedies for diarrhea can be made in your own home. If you have a severe case or chronic case you should see a doctor. It could cause severe dehydration and rectal bleeding.

Diarrhea can be caused by a variety of things including infection, virus, food sensitivities, or a reaction to medications. Let's look at some of the natural remedies.

Fasting

One of the natural remedies for diarrhea is resting your digestive system through fasting. Your digestive system needs a chance to get rid of all the bad stuff in there and heal. Fasting can mean not eating at all or just cutting certain foods out of your diet. If you know you have difficulties digesting certain foods you should cut them out of your diet. Fast for about 24 hours or until the diarrhea stops whichever comes first.

When you're fasting you must continue to drink. Diarrhea dehydrates you. You have to make sure you get plenty of fluids so you don't get severely dehydrated.

Food

There are certain foods you should cut out of your diet when you're having this digestive issue. These include:

  • corn
  • diary
  • alcolhol
  • carbonated beverages
  • chocolate
  • caffeine
  • cabbage
  • peaches
  • pears
  • prunes
  • potatoes

The BRAT or BRATTY diet is commonly used to treat diarrhea. This is an acronym for the foods included in the diet.

  • Bananas
  • Rice (preferably brown)
  • Applesauce (preferably all-natural unsweetened)
  • Toast (preferably whole wheat)

BRAT or to make the diet BRATTY add tea and yogurt. Yogurt contains probiotics that will help the digestive system heal. Don't buy yogurt that is loaded with sugar. Try plain yogurt with a cut up banana in it to give it some sweetness. The tea you use should not be caffienated. You can use an herbal tea like chamomile or peppermint. These foods will have a constipating effect that will stop your diarrhea.

Herbs

Here are some herbs that can be used in natural remedies for diarrhea.

  • garlic
  • raspberry leaf
  • chamomile
  • cinnamon
  • cayenne pepper
  • geranium
  • feverfew
  • caraway
  • boneset
  • mugwort
  • peppermint
  • slippery elm
  • turmeric
  • yarrow
  • tormentil
  • meadowsweet
  • nutmeg
  • catnip

Warning

Like I said before diarrhea can be quite serious. You should go to the doctor if you are severely dehydrated and haven't urinated for 8 hours, if your stools are black or bloody, if you have severe abdominal cramping, if you have severe rectal pain, or if you have a fever of 102 degrees F or higher.
