Natural Remedies for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Natural remedies for carpal tunnel syndrome can help relieve the pain and discomfort you feel in your hands and wrists from carpal tunnel syndrome. These tips will help your hands recover so you can return to your normal life pain free.

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is caused by the compression of the main nerve that runs down your arm to your hand. This nerve known as the median nerve originates in your neck and runs down your shoulder and arm to your hand.

On the way to the hand the nerve passes through a narrow area in your wrist referred to as the carpal tunnel. The bottom and sides of the carpal tunnel are made up of the bones of the wrist. The top of the tunnel is made up of a piece of fibrous tissue called the transverse carpal ligament.

The median nerves doesn't pass through the carpal tunnel alone. It shares the space with the tendons that pass along the wrist to the fingers.

The tingling and numbness that CTS causes is a result of compression of the median nerve. This nerve can become compressed in the muscles at any point along the arm and shoulder, but the most common area of compression is in the carpal tunnel itself. When the tendons it shares its space with become swollen or the top of the tunnel is continuously pushed down from resting your hands on a hard surface the nerve becomes compressed and you feel tingling in the extremities.

Stretching

Stretching should be used with most natural remedies for carpal tunnel syndrome. Loosening up the muscles along the median's nerves path can help ease compression and act as a good carpal tunnel syndrome cure. I used to use this simple stretch when my own carpal tunnel syndrome was acting up.

Stand next to a wall. Stick your arm straight out to the side and put your hand against the wall with your fingers spread. Your shoulders should be relaxed. Your elbow should be straight. Now turn your head and look over the opposite shoulder. you should feel a stretch in your arm and in your hand.

Rest

Doing the same repetitive movements again and again cause CTS. Take a rest from these activities and give your nerves and tendons time to heal.

Massage

Massage is one of the best natural remedies for carpal tunnel syndrome. It's a great way to loosen up your muscles to help release pressure on you median nerve. It's best to see a professional massage therapist for this, but you can also help yourself by simply massaging the muscles in your arms and shoulders daily.
