Natural healing herbs have been used by many cultures to treat illness. This index of herbs lists all kinds of herbs from chinese healing herbs to herbs used in Native American herbal medicine.

Plants have contain chemicals that have healing properties. The prescription medicines you can get on the market today were derived from chemicals in plants. Why not get the medicine from the original source?

I love learning about herbs and what they can be used to treat. I keep dried herbs in jars in my kitchen and use them to make medicinal teas and oils. There are nourishing herbs that you can take daily to ensure that you're getting all the vitamins you need. You can take other herbs to treat specific ailments. Let's look at some of the most common ones.

Alfalfa--One of the oldest cultivated foods, alfalfa has been used traditionally by many cultures. It has been used in herbal medicine for 1,500 years.

Artichoke Leaf--Artichokes taste great, but did you know the leaves are one of the natural healing herbs that can be used to lower your cholesterol?

Asian Ginseng--This form of ginseng is also referred to as Chinese ginseng or Korean ginseng.

Black Cohosh--This natural healing herb is commonly used for gynecological problems, but it does have other uses too.

Blue Cohosh--Blue cohosh was used by Native Americans to tone the uterus. It is still used today in folk remedies for the same purposes.

Buckthorn--Found in Africa, Asia and Europe this herb con be used to treat constipation, but it can have some nasty side effects.

Burdock--This herb is a great liver purifier. It remembers another more dangerous plant though so make sure you get it from a trusted source.

Butterbur--This herb has been used in Europe as a migraine remedy for many years. If not prepared properly though the plant is toxic to humans.

Calendula--Commonly known as pot marigold this common garden flower can be used both internally and externally for healing.

Cascara sagrada--This shrud is found in the Pacific northwest and was used as a laxative for many years.

Catnip--Everyone knows that cats love this herb, but did you know it is counted among natural healing herbs too?

Celery Seed--This tiny little seed is an anti-inflammatory and a pain reliever.

Chamomile--This soothing herb can be used to treat indigestion and inflammatory disorders.

Chasteberry, Vitex, or Chaste tree berry--This herb is used to treat a variety of female disorders.

Cinnamon Cassia--Also known as false cinnamon, this more powerful version of cinnamon is used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to regulate blood sugar.

Dandelion--Considered a common weed to most. This hardy plant has been used in tradition remedies in China, Europe and the Middle East for centuries.

Devil's Claw--This herb is related to the sesame plant and gets its name from the claw-shaped fruit that grows on it.

Dong Quai--Dong quai has been used in Asian countries for many years to balance female hormones.

Echinacea--This is one of the most popular herbs. Most people know that if you feel a cold coming on you should take echinacea.

Elderberry--This berry has been used to make effective medicine for treating coughs and congestion. It's also used to make jams and tarts.

Eucalyptus--Commonly used in cough remedies, this herb can also be used to treat muscle pain and sprains.

Eyebright--This lovely flowering plant has been used in folk remedies in Europe to treat eye problems for many years.

Feverfew--This herd has a flower on it that resembles a daisy and can be used to reduce fevers.

Ginger Root--This herb is delicious. It's one of my favorites for cooking, but it can also be used to make herbal remedies.

Goldenseal--Paired with echinacea, these natural healing herbs can make a powerful cold remedy. This herb can also be used on its own.

Guggul--This Ayurvedic herb is used to treat high cholestrol and arthritis.

Hawthorn--This thorny shrub can be used to help treat a variety of heart problems.

Holy Basil--This aromatic herbs can be used to reduce stress. It also tastes great in Thai dishes.

Horsetail--This herb is used to treat bladder and urinary tract infections and slow down bleeding.

Hyssop--This expectorant will help you beat that cough that doesn't seem to want to go away.

Lemon Balm--This herb gives off a lemony odor and has been used in ancient Greece to treat insect bites. It has been used as a sedative since the Middle Ages.

Licorice Root--This medicinal root is sweeter than sugar and is sometimes used to cover up the bitter taste of other natural healing herbs in herbal remedies.

Olive Leaf--The ancient Greeks didn't only use olive leaves to make head dresses. They knew their healing properties.

Pau d'arco--Made from the inner bark of the Tabebuia tree, this herb was used by ancient Incas and Aztecs.

Psyllium husks--Psyllium husks are commonly used as a gentle natural stool softener.

Red clover--This common plant can be used to treat many conditions, but is primarily used to treat breathing and lung probelms.

Red Yeast Rice--This natural remedy acts like a statin drug blocking enzymes in the liver to lower cholesterol.

Rhubarb Root--Rhubarb is good for something other than pie. It can be used to treat digestive problems and many other conditions.

Sarsaparilla Root--This root was used to make a popular drink in the Wild West, but it has medicinal value too.

Senna--Senna is the most powerful herbal laxative you can use. It's sometimes used in diet teas, but should be used with caution.

Stinging nettle--Nettle is a common plant. If you live in the areas it's native too you can find it most anywhere. It is a nourishing plant that can be used in treating a variety of conditions.

Terminalia Arjuna--This Ayurvedic herb is commonly used to treat heart problems.

Thyme--Thyme is delicious in stews, but did you know this culinary herb can be used to treat respiratory problems?

White Willow Bark--White willow bark is the original aspirin.

Wild Yam--This herb has been used by Native Americans to treat everything from childbirth pain to colic.

Yarrow--This herb has been associated with divination and the casting of spells, but it can be used for a variety of medical purposes too.
