So you've got fleas. Those pesky little critters are jumping all over your house and eating up you and your pet. Well it's time to take some action to get rid of them. There are a few methods you can use to get rid of them. Let's look at some of the best home remedies for fleas.
Your Pet
Let's get the fleas off your pet first. Their are some solutions to fleas that you can use on dogs, but not on cats so I'll be clear about what you can do to which animal.
If your pet has too many fleas and has flea problems on a regular basis it could be a sign that your pet is not getting the nutrition needed. Giving your pet an appropriate multivitamin will ensure they get all the vitamins and minerals required. A healthy animal is less appealing to fleas.
Dogs
Brewer's (nutritional) yeast and garlic are good natural flea remedies. This isn't an immediate fix. It'll take a few weeks for the yeast and garlic to get into your dogs bloodstream.
You can give dogs over 50 pounds 2 teaspoons of yeast and 1 clove of garlic per day mixed into their food.
For smaller dogs use 1 teaspoon of yeast and skip the garlic. Garlic can be quite strong and may burn a small animals throat.
Wash your dog in warm soapy water. This isn't exactly natural, but I know both of these things work well. You can use Pantene to wash your dog or Dawn lemon scented dish soap. Both things kill and repell fleas.
You can give your dog a dry bath by putting baking soda all over your dog and using a brush to brush off the excess.
You can make a natural flea collar for your dog by soaking a natural fiber rope in 2 tablespoon peppermint essential oil, 1/2 cup rosemary essential oil, 2 tablespoons white cedar essential oil, 1/2 cup citronella oil, and 2 tablespoons eucalyptus essential oil. Let the rope dry for a few hours and tie it around your dog's neck.
Cats
Here are some natural flea remedies for your cat. You can't give cats garlic because it's toxic and could kill your cat. You can give your cat brewer's yeast though. You can put 1/2 teaspoon of brewer's yeast in your cat's food daily.
This will be a challenge, but you need to wash your cat in warm soapy water. You can put a teaspoon of salt in the water to help kill fleas. Make sure you rinse your cat well afterwards.
Comb both your cats and dogs will a flea comb daily to make sure all the flea eggs are removed. In about 10 days to 2 weeks, any eggs that you missed will hatch so you'll need to wash your pet again.
Your House
Now you have to get those fleas out of your house. Here are some natural flea remedies for your home. First you need to wash your pet's bedding or where ever your pet sleeps on a regular basis in hot water and dry it in the dryer.
Mix equal parts borax and salt. Sprinkle the mixture all over the floor and any furniture that's fleas infested. Make sure you get under your furniture too. The salt absorbs all the moisture the fleas need and the borax erodes the fleas' exoskeleton. Leave the mixture overnight. In the morning, vacuum it all up, remove the bag from you vacuum and throw it away in your outdoor trash can. You'll have to do this again in 10 days to 2 weeks to get any new hatchingly from eggs you missed.
