Natural Cough Remedies
Home Remedies for Coughs

Natural cough remedies can be made at home. You can even made some homemade cough medicine with ingredients you already have in your kitchen. Using home remedies for coughs can not only ease your cough, but also be satisfying. I just love making my own natural remedies.

I used to get a pretty bad cough every year in February. I don't get it anymore, but when I did I used two common natural cough remedies--lemon and honey.

Lemon

Lemon can help cut through the phlegm that is causing you to cough. You can use it in a few ways. The simplest way is to squeeze 1/2 a lemon into a small bit of water and drink it down fast.

Honey

Honey can work well in natural cough remedies. Cut up a quarter of an onion finely. Add it a quarter a cup of honey. Put the mixture in a sauce pan and heat it slowly. Once it starts to bubble remove it from the heat and let it cool. Take a teaspoon of the mixture three times daily to help treat your cough.

Mix one tablespoon of lemon juice and one teaspoon of honey. Take it as needed to ease your cough.

Mix 1/2 teaspoon of honey with 1/2 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar and take three times daily.

Peel and grate a 2 inch slice of ginger. Put the grated ginger in a sieve and squeeze out 1/2 a teaspoon of ginger juice. Mix it with a teaspoon of honey and take the mixture every morning and evening until the cough goes away.

Elderberries

Here's a simple recipe for elderberry cough syrup.

  • 2 cups filtered water
  • 4 ounces fresh elderberries or 2 ounces dried elderberries
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 cup honey
Combine all ingredients except the honey in a sauce pan and bring to a slow boil. Turn down the heat and let it simmer for 20 minutes. Let it cool for 1/2 hour. Then add more filtered water to make the volume of the mixture 2 cups again. Add the honey and turn the heat back to medium and bring it to a slow boil again. Let the ingredients mix together further. Once the honey is completely dissolved turn off the heat and let the mixture cool. Pour it through a strainer and then store your homemade cough medicine in dark glass bottles.

Steam

Try steaming your face. I often used this method to control coughs and congestion. Heat up a large pot of water on the stove. You can add a couple of chamomile tea bags or peppermint tea bags to help soothe your throat.

Take the pot of the stove. Put your face over the pot and put a towel over your head to help trap the steam in. Breathe deeply for as long as you comfortably can.

Prevention

The best way natural cough remedies involve prevention. If you are healthy you'll be less likely to develop a cough.

Firstly, if you smoke stop. Smoking is no good for you and can give you a terrible cough.

Eat better. I noticed that since I've stopped eating processed food I've stopped getting my yearly cough. Cleaning up your diet will help you be as healthy as possible. Stay away from white flour and white sugar. Eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables.

Eating garlic will help keep colds away. Add garlic to the food you eat everyday. Add some garlic to your soup. Crush half a clove and put it in your salad.
