Holy Basil

Holy basil is one of the most important herbs in Ayurvedic medicine. It is considered sacred in Hindu traditions and is grown around temples.
Other Names
This herb is also called Ocimum tenuiflorum, Tulsi, Tulasi, Bai Gkaprow, Brinda, Indian Basil, Hot Basil, and Sacred Basil.
Appearance
This herb grows to be 30 to 60 cm tall. It has small hairs on the stems and oval shaped leaves that grow opposite to each other on the stems.
Origins
This herb is native to India.
Part Used
The leaves, stems and seeds are used.
Medicinal Uses
This herb is anti-inflammatory and contains many antioxidants. It is also antifungal and antibacterial. It can be used to treat:
- stress
- cough
- sore throat
- colds and flu
- headaches
- bug bites
- ringworm
- respiratory problems
- memory problems

Side Effects and Warnings
This herb slows blood clotting so don't take if you are scheduled to get surgery.
Its safety for pregnant and nursing women is unknown.
