Hawthorn herb is has been used in Native American traditional medicine for many years. It was also used in traditional remedies from Asia and Europe.
Other Names
This herb is also called crataegus, mayflower, mayblossom, and haw.
Appearance
It is a shrub or small tree that grows to about 5 to 15 meters tall. It has thorny branches and small white flowers in the spring that become red haw or berry-like fruit in May.
Origins
It can be found in North America, Europe and Asia.
Part Used
Hawthorn leaves and berries are used for medicinal purposes.
Medicinal Uses
This herb contains bioflavonoid complexes. It is used in treating many heart related conditions including:
- angina
- high blood pressure
- poor circulation
- atherosclerosis
- congestive heart failure
- high cholesterol

Side Effects and Warnings
Some people may experience a sedative effect from taking this herb. Some may also feel nausea. If you take too much it could result in dangerously low blood pressure or cardiac arrhythmia.
You should not take this herb if you are pregnant or nursing. You also shouldn't take it if you are taking any prescription drugs. Don't give it to children.
