Devil's claw was given its name because of the uniquely shaped fruit. In South Africa, the plant's root and tubers have been used in folk remedies for centuries.
Other Names
This herb is also known as Harpagophytum procumbens, wood spider, and grapple plant.
Appearance
The plant grows low to the ground and has dark green leaves with white, hairy undersides. The plant grows red trumpet-shaped flowers that turn into large claw-shaped fruit. The plant is related to the sesame plant.
Origins
The plant is native to southern Africa.
Parts Used
The roots and tubers are dried and used for medicinal purposes.
Medicinal Uses
This herb has sedative, anti-imflammatory, and pain killing properrties. It is used to treat digestive problems.

Side Effects and Warnings
This herb causes the stomach to produce more acid. Over the long term this could lead to the formation of ulcers. People who have ulcer or gallstones shouldn't use this herb.
Occassionally, people experience ringing in the ears, headaches and upset stomach when they take the herb.
This herb affects blood sugar and shouldn't be taken by diabetics without the supervision of a doctor.
This herb may cause uterine contractions and shouldn't be taken by pregnant women. It should also be avoided when nursing.
As with all herbs, you should not take it when taking other prescription medication.
