Natural Cat Hairball Remedies

These cat hairball remedies will help your cat dislodge uncomfortable hairballs from her digestive tract. Because cats clean themselves with their tongues they end up swallowing fur. Sometimes this fur can get lodged in their digestive tract causing discomfort, constipation, and vomiting.

Grooming

Comb or brush your cat often to get rid of shedding hair. The less loose hair on your cat the less hair will get into their digestive system.

Food and Treats

There is special cat food on the market that can be used as cat hairball remedies. They will help prevent your cat from getting hairballs. You can also buy cat treats that do the same thing.

Butter

Give your cat 1/2 teaspoon of melted butter once a day for a couple days to help lubricate the digestive tract so the hairball can pass from their system more easily. Don't make the melted butter a daily habit. Only give it to them for a few days. Too much butter will give your cat diarrhea.

Pumpkin

Add a teaspoon of pumpkin to your cat's canned food once a day to help get rid of hairballs.

Activity

Your cat may be unable to pass hairballs because they are not active enough. Cats do nap most of the day, but if your cat is particularly lazy try playing with him more often during the day to help get his digestive system working.

When to See the Vet

Hairballs are normal, but if your cat is continuously retching and nothing is coming up or if your cat is constipated see a vet. It could by the sign of serious intestinal blockage.
