Canine Diarrhea
Natural Dog Diarrhea Treatment
Canine diarrhea strikes every dog at some point in life. Here is a dog diarrhea treatment you can try at home. These natural remedies for dogs work, but you must remember that when diarrhea is serious you should take your dog to the vet.
Diarrhea is the symptom of something else going on with your pet. It could be as simple as your dog having gotten into the trah can and eaten something it should've or a more serious condition. When your dog has diarrhea look out for signs that it may be something more serious, like:
- vomiting
- listlessness
- blood in stool
- white or gray gums
- dehydration
If your dog has these symptoms or the diarrhea lasts more than 24 hours you should call your vet.
Fasting
Start most canine diarrhea treatments out by fasting your dog. For a large dog you can fast it for 24 hours. For smaller dogs only do the fast for 12 hours. Make sure that your dog drinks plenty of water during the fast. The fast will give the digestive system time to rest.
Yogurt
Give your dog a spoonful of yogurt with active cultures to help balance the bacteria in the gut.
Bland Diet
After the fast reintroduce your dog to food with a bland diet. Feed your dog small portions of food 4 to 5 times a day. You can include the following foods in a bland diet.
- plain cooked white rice
- skinless boiled chicken
- boiled hamburger
- cottage cheese (drain the liquid)
- boiled egg
- scrambled egg
- peeled boiled potato
make sure your do gets no oil or grease of any kind.
When your dog starts having a normal stool you can wean them off this bland diet by slowly mixing normal dog food in with it. Add more dog food everytime until eventually the dog is only eating dog food again.
Over the Counter Medications
You can use over the counter people medication to treat canine diarrhea. Pepto Bismol and Immodium are okay to use for dogs, but you should ask your vet before using them.
