Black Cohosh

Black cohosh was used by Native Americans to treat gynecological disorders and is still used in herbal remedies to treat those disorders today. It is also used to treat some other conditions.
Other Names
This herb is also known as actaea racemosa, black bugbane, bugwort, rattleroot, rattleweed, rattle top, macrotys, black snackroot, and fairy candle.
Appearance
Commonly found in the clearings of wooded areas, this plant has large, broad leaves that normally grow in sets of threes. The leaves have toothed edges. It grows long stems that white flowers bloom on in late spring and early summer.
Origins
The plant is native to North America and was used in tradition medicine by Native Americans.

The roots and rhizomes are used.
Medicinal Uses
This herb has sedative, anti-imflammatory, and analgesic properties. It is most commonly used for gynecological disorders, but can be used for a variety of conditions.

Side Effects and Warnings
If you have allergies to related plants like buttercups you shouldn't take this herb.
In large doses, it can cause some side effects including vomiting, dizziness, headaches, and low blood pressure.
Do not use this herb if you are pregnant or nursing. It used to be used to induce miscarriages.
